I’ve always been a bit of a clothes hoarder. I keep clothes until I literally cannot wear them anymore. With as many clothes as I have from collecting over the years, Jay has just as many. What’s worse, we’re both the type that likes to hang clothes more than folding them and putting them in drawers. That being said, being married means sharing everything – including closet space. In this post, I will tell you how to best organize with the space you have.
Figure Out What Can Be Put In Storage
First thing’s first – figure out what you don’t need to be accessible every single day. Even though it’s November, it’s still currently 70 degrees outside, so all of my sweaters are in a large plastic bin in our spare closet. Once it gets cold again, I will switch them out with bathing suits, tank tops, shorts, etc. I also keep any formal dresses/gowns and coats/jackets hanging in that closet. Jay keeps his suits in there.
Casual Clothes In the Dresser
Although I wish I could hang all of my clothes, there just isn’t room to. I have a very large dresser in our room, and Jay has two smaller ones. In my dresser, I of course keep the obvious stuff (underwear, pjs, socks, etc.). I also keep my casual clothes that don’t tend to wrinkle in there. This includes casual cotton tops, t-shirts, tank tops, athletic shorts, jean shorts, cotton bottoms, etc. These are the items I pull from most often.
Nice Clothes In The Closet
There are two types of people in this world: those who hang their jeans and those who fold them. I am team hang up my jeans, along with all of my other pants. They are just too bulky to put in drawers. The jeans and pants go on the bottom row of the closet, because they are short enough to hover above the floor down there. I also put my nice tops down there. I have them all organized by color. On the top row of the closet, I hang all of my dresses. These go on top, because they are too long to put on the bottom row without hitting the bottom. They are also color coordinated. Having my closet color coordinated allows me to know exactly where to find whatever it is that I am looking for at any given time.
Shoes
All of my shoes are neatly laid out in two lines on my closet floor and are, you guessed it, color coordinated. I do keep most of my brown and black shoes in a separate closet, because a lot of them are boots and they take up a lot of room. My flats, heels, and colored shoes are in my closet.
If you are like me, and have so many clothes that it’s overwhelming, I hope these tips helped you get at least a little grip on your wardrobe.
