As promised, I have finally taken the time to sit down and record all of the details of Hollings’ big girl room! If you follow me on instagram, you have seen what a labor of love this room has been for me. For those of you who are new around here, Hollings is my 2 year old, and I am currently 7 months pregnant with her little brother (he is due on Christmas day!).
Two of my biggest goals for before the baby boy arrives were to a)have Hollings potty trained (because the thought of having two children in diapers just scares me) and b)move Hollings into a bed. I am happy to say that we have achieved both goals!
All of Hollings nursery furniture is white, so my plan all along was to keep the nursery the nursery and move Hollings into our guest bedroom with all new furniture. I wanted this transition to be done months before the baby gets here, so that she doesn’t associate the two together (therefore feeling like the baby kicked her out of her room).
Hollings has been doing great in her new room! She loves being a big girl in there. I am going to go into detail on everything in there, with links, below.
I love this little section of her room. It’s very simple. I feel like the mirror and poof stool are stylish, yet still funky enough for a little girls room. I love reusing items that we already have in the house wherever I can, without sacrificing style, and I feel like I accomplished that here. The mirror was passed down to us by Jay’s grandmother when we first moved to Durham 2.5 years ago. The poof stool was mine from college! I got it from HomeGoods.
This section of Hollings’ room is probably my favorite, and if you follow me on instagram, you know why. That dresser was originally all black. At first, wanted a white dresser for her room, but all of the ones that I LOVED were $300 at least, even on Facebook marketplace. The dream would have been to buy a super fun dresser from Anthropologie, but as many of you know, I am a full time mom, and Jay is full time law student. So, decorating my house with beautiful Anthropologie pieces will have to wait.
This is the original dresser. I got it used on Facebook Marketplace for $80. After cleaning the entire thing, I sanded it all over, cleaned it again, and then painted it the most beautiful blue. The color is from Home Depot. Its a Glidden color named Crystal Lake, linked below.
I did two coats of the blue, followed by a clear coat on top, and it was perfect! I also swapped out the drawer knobs for some really fun pink and blue ones. The knobs were $24 for 20. I was DYING to use some wallpaper somewhere in the room, but we are renting our house, so I knew it couldn’t be on the actual walls. I got the idea to wallpaper part of the dresser from an HGTV video on repurposing furniture. I found this beautiful blue and white wallpaper for just under $35 for a 20.5in by 18ft roll. Both are linked below.
I painted a clear coat of protective paint over the wallpapered top, just to be safe. I love how the dresser turned out!
I knew that since the dresser was wider and lower, I wanted to go opposite by getting a tall and narrow bookshelf to give the room dimension. I am loving the bamboo/natural wood trend in home decor right now, and I knew that I wanted to incorporate that into Hollings’ room. This dresser was basically exactly what I had envisioned in my head, and it was only $59!
Hollings’ bedside table ties together the white from her bed and the bamboo from her bookshelf. It is the perfect height for her. On it sits the lamp from her nursery (which I’m pretty sure is old Buy Buy Baby) and a hatch sound machine! This sound machine has been KEY in getting her to stay in her room. I programmed it to turn blue at 7am every morning. She knows to stay in her bed until it turns blue. It made switching her from a crib to a bed so seamless. Both are linked below.
When I was pregnant with Hollings, Jay’s mom was extremely sick with cancer. Jay’s dad recorded her saying “This is your Mimi. I love you.” She has since passed away, but Hollings has this beautiful canvas hanging in her room, and what’s even better is there’s a scanable code on the back that lets us listen to the recording on our phones whenever we want.
The macrame wall hangings were something I knew I wanted. They are very popular right now, but also still girly and young enough to go in a little girl’s room. The mirrors are $28 for both, and the pink one (which matches Hollings’ bedding perfectly) is $30. Both are linked below.
Last but not least, we have Hollings’ bed and bedding. When I was her age, I had a white iron bed, too. I knew that is exactly what I wanted for her big girl room. It is such a timeless look. ALL of her bedding is from HomeGoods.
I hope that even if your don’t buy any of the items in this post that it at the very least gave you some inspiration! I had so much fun putting the room together for my sweet girl, and I love even more that she loves it!
